iPhone 4: A4 Chip and Gyroscope

The iPhone 4 will also feature an Apple-designed A4 CPU, following along the lines of the processor powering the iPad. Jobs said the A4 processor improved power management, so the iPhone 4 will manage 40 percent more talk time on 3G networks (up to 7 hours), or up to 6 hours of 3G Web browsing or 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing. The device can also play up to 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music, and should have an standby time of up to 300 hours. The iPhone 4 will also pack up to 32 GB of onboard flash storage, and will offer quad-band HSDPA/HSUPA for mobile broadband speeds up to 7.2Mbps downstream, 4.8Mbps upstream…assuming carrier networks support that technology. The iPhone 4 will also support 802.11n Wi-Fi, assisted GPS, Bluetooth, and packs and accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, and an ambient light sensor,. The iPhone 4 also sports a gyroscope, which enables six-axis motion sensing…just like a game controller, and iPhone OS 4 will offer developer APIs to leverage the gyroscope: Jobs envisions the gyroscope enabling whole new types of mobile gaming.

Video Calling

front-facing camera in the iPhone 4 exists for one and only one purpose: video calls. Jobs demonstrated what Apple is dubbing FaceTime video calling with the iPhone 4. The feature will initially be Wi-Fi only and operate iPhone 4 devices—no word in whether FaceTime will support, say, desktops or notebooks equipped with cameras. Users will be able to switch to the rear-mounted 5 megapixel camera on the iPhone 4 to let callers see what they’re seeing, or stick with the front-facing camera for face-to-face chat. Jobs says Apple plans to work with mobile operators to make FaceTime available over 3G data services. Apple says it plans to ship millions of FaceTime-capable devices this year—and if current iPhone sales are any indicator, they’re right—so iPhone 4 users will have plenty of people to talk to. (How far off is an app called FaceTime Roulette?)

iPhone 4: Retina Display

The iPhone 4 will also sport what Jobs described as a “retina display” with four times the pixel density of a typical LCD display at a whopping 326 pixels per inch—by far denser than anything else in the consumer electronics market. The result is a 3.5-inch display with a native resolution of 960 by 640 pixels that is actually a higher resolution than the typical human eye is capable of perceiving, when held at a distance of just 10 to 12 inches. Jobs claims the iPhone 4’s display winds up looking like a high quality printed book (albeit that emits light!) rather than a blocky pixellated grid. The iPhone OS automatically handles rendering text and controls at the higher resolution for the iPhone 4, so developers don’t need to do anything to update their applications to look good on the new display…but, of course, if developers want to add higher-resolution graphics to their apps, they will look stunning on the iPhone 4.

How to set up your iPhone or iPad hotspot

These instrutions apply to the new iPad as well as the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Go to the settings menu:

In settings, you will see a 'personal hotspot' menu item. Tap it.

In the personal hotspot menu, slide the "personal hotspot" option to "on".

You will note that Apple has allocated the connection a default password which is shown on this screen too. You can either use it (as each iPhone 4 gets a different random password) or change it to something you can more easily remember by tapping on it.

Once the network is selected and you have put in the password you selected in the last step (or Apple's default password), you will be able to connect your tablet, laptop and any other Wi-Fi device to the net via your iPhone's data plan.

Then, on your computer's Wi-Fi menu, you should see your iPhone pop up in the list after a few seconds. The network name is the name of your iPhone in iTunes — in our case, "Dan's iPhone 4".

Bear in mind that the feature does tend to use up a fair bit of battery power, so use it sparingly if the phone is already on low battery power. If you have got the iPhone's power adaptor handy and are near an AC powerpoint, plug in your iPhone to top up the battery while you work.

If you are travelling, you can marry this personal hotspot feature up beautifully with a cheap data SIM card. For the US and UK, Tru SIM is outstandingly cheap, and in Asia, Bridge Alliance DataRoam Unlimited offers unlimited data in many Asian countries for a flat daily fee.

EA to render iPhone Rock Band app unplayable

EA is not known for caring about games that are more than a few months old and it regularly shuts down servers that support multiplayer on console and PC games. For the most part though, those games remain playable albeit in single-player form. That’s not the case for App Store games, however.
Anyone who paid $4.99 and purchased Rock Band for the iPhone recently got the message you see above. That’s right, this is a game that requires no server to play, and yet EA is for some undisclosed reason rendering it unplayable after May 31.

If that wasn’t frustrating enough for anyone who still enjoys playing the game, you can still buy the app from the App Store. EA is apparently more than willing to accept your $5 for a game it knows will become useless in less than a month. And I hate to think how the person who purchased it yesterday and got this message today feels. I don’t think they’ll appreciate the, “Thanks for rocking out with us!” part.

My best guess as to why this is happening is that there’s some kind of music license involved. Typically EA would have to renew such a license to keep offering the game, and that cost has surely been compared to ongoing sales. If the cost is more than the income, then the game gets shutdown. If that is the case, then there’s no way EA will reverse the decision as it would cost them money for a game that is a couple of years old. That doesn’t explain why existing players are losing out too, though.

Whatever the case, this is totally unfair for anyone who paid $5 to purchase the app. Unless it was stated at time of purchase that the game would stop functioning on May 31, gamers have every right to be angry at EA for doing this.

Zephyr jailbreak tweak adds multitasking gestures to iPhone

If you are an iOS user, you probably give your home button (and your thumb) a grueling workout on a daily basis. Every time you want to use multitasking to switch apps, you have to double-tap the lone physical button on the device’s front face. Apple has implemented multitasking gestures for the iPad, but has done no such thing for the iPhone or iPod touch. You can rack another one up for the jailbreak community, as it has released a new app that allows you to multitask on the iPhone with single-finger gestures.

Zephyr is the creation of Cydia developer chpwn, and the premise is simple: swipe up from the bottom of the screen to bring up the app-switcher (normally activated with a double tap of the home button), and swipe left to right to switch back and forth between recent apps.

Apple has likely opted out of iPhone and iPod touch multitasking gestures due to the small size of the screen. How many gestures can you implement on a 3.5-inch display? Zephyr, however, makes a strong case against that argument. The left to right swipe lets you start the gesture from the bezel, which frees up a bit extra room.

In fact the tweak fits so naturally into iOS that this could be another jailbreak feature that Apple steals and uses for itself. We have seen this previously with iOS functions like multitasking (it closely resembles an old Cydia app called Circuitious), notification banners and Wi-Fi Sync (Apple didn’t even bother changing the name of that one). Of course, as the Zephyr gesture tweak borrows heavily from the iPad’s multitasking gestures, it wouldnot be as blatant a move for Apple to “borrow” it.
Zephyr is a free tweak, and can be found by searching for it in Cydia on a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch.

How to jailbreak iOS 5.1.1 tethered on Windows or Mac

Apple has been working its iOS software engineers extra hard to get the newest version of iOS ready to go, and it’s ready for your installing pleasure now. This is mostly a bug fix update with not big feature additions in sight. If you’ve previously been jailbroken, though, you’re going to have to go through the process again. Luckily, the Redsn0w jailbreak tool has been updated to help you with that.
Before you embark on this quest, it is important to remember that this is still a tethered jailbreak, which can be a little inconvenient. You will have to tether the device to your computer each time you want to reboot. If that sounds like too much of a hassle, this tool isn’t for you. Also, this method is only working for the A4-powered devices like the iPhone 4 and iPad 1.
First- you have to download the Redsn0w tool to your Windows or Mac.
Once you have your materials, go ahead and run the Redsn0w executable.
Go into Extras and pick the Select IPSW option, and direct Redsn0w to the iOS 5.1 software you just downloaded.

Back on the main screen of Redsn0w you will finally be able to click that big Jailbreak button. Make sure you have set the program to install the Cydia store as well.
Redsn0w will show you how to get the device into DFU mode, and get it connected to the computer and recognized by Redsn0w. When it has been detected, Redsn0w will run the jailbreak automatically. When the device reboots, your jailbreak is complete, and you should have Cydia on the home screen. If you need to reboot the device at any point, plug it in and choose Just Boot from the “Extras” section of Redsn0w.

Apple has been making it increasingly difficult to get full access to iOS at a low level, but the jailbreak community keeps finding vulnerabilities.

Untethered jailbreak demonstrated for iOS 5, iOS 5.1

Are you itching for that untethered iOS 5 jailbreak that’s just around the corner? Do you like being teased? If so, you’ll want to check out the video that iOS hacker extraordinaire pod2g has posted. As advertised, it’s a jailbreak and it doesn’t require PC connection after a reboot.
The phone in the video is an iPhone 4, not the iPhone 4S. pod2g has also been working on an iOS 5 jailbreak for the A5-running iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, but they’re farther from release. This jailbreak will be for all iOS 5 devices other than those two. That means the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch 4th generation, and original iPad will be getting in on the untethered action.
Most developers hate being pestered for release dates, but pod2g has been generous with progress updates. Last week it sounded like the jailbreak was going through its final days of testing, but he’s had more kinks to work out. He now says that it’s nearly ready for prime time, but also asks for patience, saying that there are “some more days to wait.”
An untethered jailbreak for iOS 5 would be a welcomed holiday gift for iOS users. The firmware has been around for a couple of months now. Though it has been jailbreakable from the beginning, it’s a tethered jailbreak, requiring you to connect your device to a PC every time you reboot your device. The untethered jailbreak will remove those chains.
As nice as the untethered jailbreak will be, the real prize will be a jailbreak for A5 devices. The iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have thus far proven to be nearly impossible to hack, but pod2g has been making progress on that front too. Last weekend he mentioned that the biggest obstacles were processor cache issues, but he quickly remedied that. The iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak won’t be release as quickly as the jailbreak in the video, but there is a good chance pod2g will be releasing it before too long.

Zite follows Flipboard releases app for iPhone

Hot on the heels of Flipboard for iPhone and Google Currents, another content hub is expanding its reach. Zite, previously an iPad exclusive, has released its first iPhone app.
Zite is like Pandora for news, in that it learns as you use it. If you like something, give it a thumbs up; if you don’t like an article or a source, give it a thumbs down. You can log in with your Twitter or Google Reader account to help it better learn your preferences.
While your own feeds will be integrated, dont expect to use Zite as an RSS or Twitter browser. Added sources will be blended in with Zite’s, and there is no way to separate them. It’s great for finding new sources, but is unable to isolate your sources.
Categorization plays a bigger role in Zite. Rather than just breaking feeds down into general categories (news, technology, sports), each of those categories is broken down further. Technology, for example, gives you more specific categories like Android, iPhone, Mac news, Gadgets, Sci-tech, and Mobile.
Otherwise, much is like Flipboard: feeds are of high quality, they are presented in a clean and attractive layout, and the app makes the transition to the small screen beautifully.
Who knew this would become the week of the digital content hub? It’s likely that Flipboard’s iPhone launch spurred the release of Currents and Zite for iPhone. Perhaps the apps were already in their final stages, and the developers opted to release before readers all settle into Flipboard.
Which service you choose will depend on what you are looking for. Flipboard has the most customization, Zite is best at introducing new content, and Current shows trending topics.

Install Settings Shortcuts on your iPhone - no jailbreak required

If you were an early adopter of the hot-selling iPhone 4S, you might be sorely missing a jailbreak by now. There is currently no such hackery available for the handset, either tethered or untethered. One of the most-missed jailbreak tweaks could be SBSettings, which allows you to access common system settings with just a single swipe. While it may not be quite the same, a new tweak now allows those folks without a jailbreak — including the many iPhone 4S owners out there, to have a similar way to quickly access their favorite settings.

The tweak utilizes URL schemes to access basic system settings like WiFi, Bluetooth, Hotspot, and iCloud. It is basically creating Safari web apps.Only instead of a web page, the shortcut will open the corresponding preference pane.
A wonderful bonus is that the designer, Jeff Broderick, has created some truly gorgeous icons. They fit in perfectly with the iOS user interface, utilizing stock icons when applicable.
The best part is that, unlike a previous trick that involves a 99¢ App Store app called Icon Project, there is no purchase required for this method. This one is all free, and can be done in a minute or less
To get started, simply head over to the designer’s page on your iOS device. Select the icon that you want, choose ‘Install,’ and you will be presented with the following confirmation screen, which you will want to confirm.
You can repeat this for as many settings shortcuts as you want. If you collect them all in an easy-access folder, it is closer to SBSettings than non-jailbroken iPhones were previously able to get.
The tweak works on any iOS device. The high-res icons also look just as snazzy on the larger iPad’s display as they do on the smaller iPhone and iPod touch.

Download iOS 5.0.1 with battery fix now

Apple has released the first official update to iOS 5, which fixes the reported battery drain problems.
In addition to fixing bugs related to battery life, the update to iOS 5.0.1 also adds multitasking gestures for the first iPad, resolves some bugs with Documents in the Cloud, and improves Siri’s voice recognition for people with Australian accents.
Remember that with iOS 5 you can now install software updates over the air. So there is no longer any need to wait until you get home, grab a cable, and connect to iTunes on a PC in order to apply the update. Simply open your Settings app, choose General, and then Software Update to initiate the process. The delta update file is less than 40MB, and should only take a couple of minutes to install over WiFi.
Apple was probably wise to get this update out early, as the battery drain issue was starting to get a lot of media attention. First thought to be attributed to the iPhone 4S, Apple support forums were flooded with pages of complaints about unusually short uptime on the latest handset. PC Mag’s testing then suggested that the issue was more likely connected to iOS 5 than specifically to the 4S. While most users didnot appear to have terrible battery drain, some did and few were reporting stellar uptime.
Developers who had installed the beta version of 5.0.1 reported dramatic improvements in battery life, so this could be just what the doctor ordered to fan those flames. We will do some testing and report back, but if you have been having drain problems on any iOS device, we’d recommend installing this update right away.

How to transfer apps from iPhone to iTunes

Apple has made it ridiculously easy to transfer iPhone apps to iTunes. There are a couple of things that need to be in place first:
Sign in with your Apple ID
First, navigate to the “Store” menu entry in iTunes, and choose “Sign in” if you havenot already. This will need to be the Apple ID that you used when downloading the apps from your iPhone.
 Authorize computer
Next, return to the “Store” menu in iTunes, and choose “Authorize Computer.” If you havenot yet done this, iTunes won’t let you transfer those apps. If you purchased apps with multiple accounts on your iPhone, then you will need to repeat these first two steps with each account.
Transfer Purchases
All that left to do is to connect your iPhone to your computer (via USB), and let iTunes do its thing. After backing up your iPhone, it will begin “transferring purchases” into iTunes. This includes both free and purchased apps — all will be backed up on your desktop or laptop. If you have previously synced your iPhone with another computer, you may see a box that says “your iPhone is synced with another iTunes library.” In this case, simply press “Transfer Purchases” and your apps will be copied. If iTunes doesnot automatically transfer your purchases, then you may have previously selected “don’t ask me again” when prompted about transferring purchases. Then simply right click on the name of your iPhone in iTunes. One of the options should be “Transfer purchases from your iPhone” Select this.
Wi-Fi syncing
One last thing is to note that, starting with iOS 5, you can wirelessly transfer your apps from your iPhone to iTunes. In iTunes, the tab for your iPhone will have a box that says “sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi.”
Leave it checked, and your apps will be wirelessly copied to iTunes regularly. Leave it unchecked, and the syncing will only happen when you physically connect your iPhone to your PC.

If in the past, jailbreaking a device was illegal, now, you have every right to tweak your phone according to your liking. Imagine being able to download games, movies, music, apps, etc. In fact, with so many new features and apps, one can say that jailbreaking your iPhone is a way to unleash its untapped powers!

Take note: Before you jailbreak your phone, take note that the following procedure is meant for iPhone 4 users only. Use this on any other model and you risk bricking your phone.

Step (1): The very first thing that you need to do is to find and download the latest version of TinyUmbrella. Search on the Internet that would link you to the TinyUmbrella site.

Step (2): As soon as the TinyUmbrella download is complete, immediately run it. As the program starts, just click on Start TSS Server.

Step (3): The next step is to run iTunes and then connect your phone to your Mac or PC. You need to restore the iOS 4.2 to your phone; do this by opening iPhone in iTunes. You should see two buttons which are Check Update or Update and Restore.

Step(7): As soon as the jailbreaking process is done, you can proceed to unlock your iPhone 4.

How to unlock iPhone 4S Safely and Easily

Having to unlock iPhone 4S  is not possible without jail breaking the iPhone first. By jailbreaking the initializing software instructions, restricting and locking the device are removed. Most of the available software are so complicated and have complex instructions that should have been incorporated into the software in the first place. It involves some easy to follow steps that should be followed very strictly. Failure to do so may render your iPhone 4 Unlocked permanently unusable. The use of simple computer software to achieve this is of utmost importance. Reducing the complexities that are passed on to the end user is vital. This software offers all of the features that would be pleasing to an end user. Notwithstanding the baseline or the firmware your iPhone is using, the software will simply guide you through the process to unlock iPhone 4S  within a few minutes.

How To Install IOS 5 on iPhone,iPod,iPad

Step (1)
First , we will want to create a full backup of the device so we can restore all of our apps, data, bookmarks, and save games once iOS 5 is installed.
iTunes should be creating backups every time you sync up, but just to be sure lets do one right this second to get the most up-to-date save state of our iOS device.

Plug your device in to your PC or Mac, load up iTunes, and find the iDoohickey in the left most column under 'Devices'. Right click and choose 'Backup'. This should be quick, but it might take a little longer if your gadget is full to the brim with data.

Step (2)
Now we need to ask Apple for the update. Click the name of your device and choose 'Check for Update'. If the Big A has uploaded the final release version of iOS 5 to its servers, a pop-up will appear asking you if you would like to install it.
Obviously, click the 'yes' button. This is a largesize file, so it will take some time for it to come down the pipes.wait.....

Step(3)

So far, so iOS 4. But this new operating system has some extra steps that Apple older updates lacked, so grab your iOS device, unhook it from iTunes, and gaze at the new setup wizard. Slide to set up.
Step(4)
You will now be shepherded through a couple of boring setup questions. Plop in your language and where you live.

You will also want to set up wi-fi, so tap your router and insert your relevant passcode to get online. If you are unable to connect right now, don't worry: just tap 'Next' and we can hook up to the net in the Settings app later.

Step(5)
Now here is a big step. You can either set up as a brand new, fresh-out-of-the-box iOS device or grab your old system settings, apps, and save games from before.
If you are going for a clean install, go to Step 6.
We, on the other hand, absolutely want to get our old stuff back - mostly because we would blow a flipping gasket if we had to play through all the old Angry Birds levels again. So we want to restore from a backup. If this is your bag, jump to Step 7.
Step(6)
Okay, you have got a few more screens to go before you are ready to start using your new device. You will want to either sign in to your Apple ID or make a new one (the instructions are simple) and then choose whether or not you want iCloud. You can always turn it on or off later, so don't sweat it.
You will also be asked whether you want to turn on Find My iDevice and Location Services. Two more features that are pretty cool, but can always be turned on or off from the Settings app in the future, so dont worry about making the wrong choice.
Finally, Apple wants to know if you will send them diagnostics reports if your gadget crashes. This is useful information for the Cupertino company, and if you're at all interested in seeing iOS devices become even more stable in the future we recommend hitting 'automatically send'.

Step(7)
Okay, we definitely dont want to lose our Real Racing 2 garage, so let's revive an old backup.
Presumably this is your first time using iOS 5, so you haven't made a cloud backup in iCloud yet. Instead, tap Restore from iTunes Backup and you will be asked to plug your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad into your PC or Mac.
We have got the classic 'Restore from back-up' screen, now. The most recent save state should be automatically selected, so make sure the little round radio button is checked and hit 'Continue' to restore all your old junk. This could take a while.
Once it's done you will get some of the same questions as Step 6, but some might be removed depending on the information your backup already has about you. Those are Find My iDevice, Location Services, Apple ID, iCloud, and diagnostics.
And you are done! Enjoy iOS 5!

How to install Siri on iPhone 4 & 3GS?

Before come any thoughts in the mind of the readers there is a statutory warning that this operation would only lead to Siri application view, it will not make the Siri operate on the device.

Make sure that the following have also been downloaded in order to eliminate any further inconvenience:
  • Jail broken iOS 5 device
  • OpenSSH and iFile from Cydia
  • SFTP client ( CyberDuck for Mac OS X and WinSCP for Windows)
  • Extracted Siri files from iPhone 4S
Now to begin with the process of how to install Siri on iPhone 4 & 3GS,one should must follow certain steps:
  • The first step is to ensure that the current device is running on the iOS 5 which will enable the iOS to install the provisions of Siri on the existing device. One can get it done through by way of upgrading the iOS on the current device.
  • The next step is to ensure that the currently installed iOS 5 is jail broken for the purpose of implementing the Siri voice assistance program with the help of redsn0w.
  • After jail breaking the iOS 5, connect the device to the computer by using iPhone explorer or the i-Funbox in order to copy AssistantServices.framework folder files, which can be obtained from the above downloads. These downloads shall be stored in the device zone: Root>System>Library>PrivateFrameworks
  • Access the Springboard folder and then copy all the data and store the same on the device zone: Root>System>Library>CoreServices>Springboard.app
  • Now it is time to access Cydia where from the iFile location one needs to visit: System>Library>CoreServices>Springboard.app
  • The .plist file needs to be accessed from here which will be different for different devices. For an instance, in case of iPhone 4, it will be in form of N90, N91, etc, and in case of iPod touch it will be named as N81Ap, etc.
  • A new property list need to be added in the same .plist file and should be named assistant. Make sure that the class is set to Boolean and the value is stated as a Yes.
  • At the end of it ensure that ‘assistant’ has been added to the .plist file
Once all of these steps have been done properly you can have the Siri application on the iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS, but again is shall be remembered that these are only for demonstration, the application will not work and if precision is not maintained, it can also permanently damage the iPhone.
